Why descent and terrain deserve their own inputs
Descent can be harder on knees and balance than climbing, while rough or exposed terrain reduces pace even when the horizontal distance is short. The hiking model keeps these loads separate.
Difficulty is personal, conditions are current
The score adjusts for fitness, climbing confidence, descent sensitivity, heights, navigation and experience. It does not know today’s mud, snow, river levels, closures or the group’s real-time condition.
Hiking difficulty questions
Is this a trail grading system?
No. It is a personal planning score. Continue to use the route’s official grade, current notices and local guidance.
Can it estimate hiking time?
Yes. The complete model uses your entered duration, while the separate Hiking Time Calculator gives a distance-and-elevation estimate.
