Night versus day flight: the real trade-off

A red-eye can preserve daytime hours and reduce hotel cost, but it asks you to sleep in a bright, noisy and physically restricted environment. The decision changes if you sleep easily onboard, have a lie-flat seat or can keep the arrival day light.

Are red-eye flights worth it?

They can be. The strongest case is often a traveler who sleeps reasonably well, has a supportive seat and can manage the arrival day. The weakest case is a short overnight flight where service leaves little sleep time and the traveler must perform immediately after landing.

Is a shorter red-eye easier?

Not always. A short overnight flight can offer so little uninterrupted time that meaningful sleep is difficult, even though the journey ends sooner.

Does extra legroom help with sleep?

It can reduce restriction, but it does not provide a horizontal sleep position. The calculator gives it a moderate improvement, not the large improvement assigned to lie-flat seating.

Does this include jet lag?
